The morning was unsettled and shifting with occasional light rain falling followed by the sun breaking through. Walking the empty sidewalks in the early morning, I try and understand why I’m so drawn to this rather niche interest of documenting these gull nests. But that’s something I’ll take on in another post…
Cambie Nest
The Cambie pair hanging out at the nest site. In previous years this is the nest where I’ve seen the earliest chicks. Let’s see if it holds true this year.
Design Nest
One of the parents on the nest at the new location. Despite being at least 50 meters away (~160 feet) and separated by an alleyway, this bird is alert to my presence. They don’t seem to be too bothered by people walking past – but as soon I stop and pay attention, they get suspicious. Because of this, I keep the amount of time I spend photographing nests to a minimum.
West Third Nest (?)
This bird was keeping watch from the location of a nest I found late last season. The rooftop is slightly too high for me to see, so I can’t be certain. But given their site fidelity and the behaviour of this bird, I’m fairly confident there is a nest at this location again.
Restaurant Nest
Brooding continues at Restaurant nest.
Culinary Nest
Looking at last year’s data, I first spotted chicks at this nest on June 21st, so it’s entirely possible we’ll see some newborns next weekend.
Brigade Nest
A new nest for this season!
Spotted from the Granville Street Bridge, it took me a while to locate it on the map. It turned out this is the rooftop of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group, about 460 meters (~1,500 feet) away from my vantage point on the bridge – hence why they’re so small in the frame. It’s maybe not entirely clear, but I am fairly certain the gull on the right is on a nest.
Chimney Nest
A quiet day at Chimney nest.
Grassy Nest
… and the same at Grassy nest.
Crossfit Nest
Both parents were present at Crossfit nest. Here’s one of them on the nest, and the other is off frame to the right.
Pyramid Nest
A slightly better photo of Pyramid nest in which you can see a little of the nest material.
The banded gull from last visit was present once again at the edge of the nest site.
Clipper Nest #1
Both parents were present this visit.
Other nests…
- Burrard Nest #2 - Both birds present, one on nest.
- Burrard Nest #3 - One bird on nest.
- Clipper Nest #2 - One bird on nest.
- Engineer Nest - One bird on nest.
Until next time.
