Gull Nest Survey, Aug 16th

Series: Nesting Gulls 2026

The season is almost over.

During the morning I spotted numerous fledgling gulls in the air, calling loudly as they pursued their parents. Several of the nests are now empty – no fledglings, no adults.

Another week or two will and young gulls will be scattered around the city.

Calling Gull

This adult was calling atop a building near Crossfit Nest. After less than 30 seconds a young gull landed and the parent regurgitated a meal for it.

The morning was overcast, and the forest fire smoke was not as bad as previous days.

Pleased to see there are still three fledglings at Burrard Nest #1.

Last survey I was unable to find any young at this nest. Happily, I saw all three again on this pass. Two were at the nest proper, the third on top of the structure, trying out their wings.

Engineer Nest

I found two fledglings still hanging around at Engineer Nest.

Chimney Nest

Chimney Nest

Arriving at Chimney Nest, there were no longer any fledglings on the small platform…

…but there was one standing awkwardly on the peak of the building. The roof is about 10 stories off the ground and I watched this fledgling with trepidation.

Even more stressful, the gull started walking down the steep roof – and that’s when I noticed the second fledgling napping against the side of the chimney structure. Luckily these two should be about ready to fledge anytime.

The two young ones at Stage Nest were lounging around as the sunlight reached their nest.

The fledgling at Bridges Nest is still accounted for.

Island Nest

The three fledglings at Island Nest are almost completely moulted into their juvenile plumage already, with only a little down remaining on their heads.

These birds confused me – they were on the same rooftop as Brick Nest, but were not the Brick Nest chicks (see below). I don’t think I missed a second nest on this rooftop and my leading theory is that these are the birds from Lagoon Nest which is located on the rooftop behind this building. I saw one of the fledglings fly a short distance, so they could have all moved over from their original nest location.

Or I completely missed a nest.

Here’s one of two chicks I spotted by Brick Nest. One adult was nearby keeping watch over them.

I was able to spy one sleepy fledgling at Rainbow Nest

Umbrella Nest fledgling (?)

I watched this fledgling jumping and flapping on a rooftop of the building Umbrella Nest is located on. There were no fledglings left on the original nest rooftop – I think they all fledged. My intuition says this is not a fledgling from Umbrella Nest, as it looks a little young. However, there are no other nests nearby I know of… so perhaps it is an Umbrella Nest bird?

I saw two fledglings at this nest. This one was on a lower level of the building where we’ve previously seen the Pelagic Cormorants collecting nesting material. The nest location is quite a bit higher, so this fledgling might not be quite strong enough to get back up yet.

The Continental Nest chick still at the original nest location. Looks like it will fledge any day.

All the fledglings at the Clipper Nests were gone, only their cinder blocks remain for next seasons chicks.

Likewise, Crossfit Nest was empty of birds.

A few new nests added. I doubt I’ll be adding any more – many of the fledglings are capable of flight now. Unless they are clearly too young, I can’t assume their nest is where I find them. QGIS Map

Until next time…
