Flappers!
The two gull chicks at the Culinary nest were quite active this morning, exploring the balcony they were born on. Here’s on of them testing out their wings.
The perennial question…
“What is this and can we eat it?”
Ferrari nest
No sign of chicks here yet, although I didn’t stay long observing.
Design nest
Here’s the best photo so far of the Design nest. No chicks spotted here yet either.
Restaurant nest
It seems to be another day of incubating, with no visible signs of chicks yet here either.
Grassy nest
Another day of waiting…
Chimney nest
Things are quiet here, with mom or dad incubating in the shade.
Crossfit nest
I made it out to the Burrard Street Bridge today to check up on some nesting locations I saw last year. I was pleased to see this spot was active again with a nesting pair. Located on to of a gym, I’ve decided this will be named Crossfit nest.
Crossfit nest, zoomed out
This spot is a little challenging to photograph, but here’s a photo showing more of the site. Both mom and dad were present this morning. Looking at these photos now, I have to appologize – I wasn’t paying much attention to my camera’s settings and the highlights are blown out on all the photos that follow.
Clipper nest #1
These next photographs aren’t great, but they are rather interesting in that both nests are on the same rooftop. Generally gulls try to keep their nests far apart from one another, as a big part of nestling mortality is caused by other gulls – they are extremely territorial and will not hesitate to kill a chick that wanders into it’s space.
This is the only set of nests I’ve seen on the same rooftop and I’m curious to watch what unfolds. They are at least 100 feet away from other another, so I don’t expect too many issues.
Clipper nest #2
The second nest on the Clipper building rooftop.
Until next time…
