Canada Goose footprints

Canada Gooose (?) footprints

There’s a small stretch of beach at Jericho park that I always visit when I’m there. It isn’t visited as often as the main beach, especially in winter. Early in the morning at low tide there’s almost always multiple bird footprints in the untrammeled sand. At first I thought these might belong to a Double-Crested Cormorant, but on closer inspection I’m going with a Canada Goose.

I often walk along the False Creek Seawall on my way to and from work, and there is rarely a shortage of Canada Geese. Over the years I’ve spotted a handful of banded CAGOs, but none more than C6R. I’ve reported this bird to the BBL six times since 2021. Banded in 2018 as an adult, this bird is at least 8 years old now.

Next time you find yourself near a flock of Canada Geese, take a quick look at their legs and see if any have a colour band. Unlike most other bids, they’re easy to approach and photograph. If you find one with a band, go to reportband.gov (unless it gets entirely de-funded by the human toilets who have taken power).

Peziza fungus

I found a large patch of these coming up by a newly installed sidewalk – they are saprotrophic and love bark mulch. This is probably Peziza varia, but I go wide with fungus ID and generally stick with genus or higher.

I found this feather blowing gently in the wind on a recent visit to the ferry jetty. Note how much of the feather is downy.

And a few recent bird photos…
